A question asked by many a person embarking on their first website project - be that a small business 'going online' for the first time or someone starting their first blog! Google Analytics is a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic. It is currently a platform inside the Google Marketing Platform brand.
You can use Analytics to:
- gain an understanding of how your site (or app) users are engaging with your content
- use Google’s machine learning capabilities to discover new insights from your data
- connect with various other Google advertising and publisher products, such as Google Ads, Ad Manager, AdSense and Display & Video 360
- analyse and share your data
Setting up and using Google Analytics can feel a little daunting at first, but there are plenty of great guidelines online, specifically Website Planet's Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Google Analytics (2019 interface) (which was recently recommended by a reader of my blog) and Google's own Get Started with Analytics.
